A fan coil air conditioning system places a unit consisting of a fan and coil directly inside the room. During operation, hot or cold water flows through the coil as needed. The fan draws indoor air into the unit, where it is filtered, cooled or heated by the coil, and then returned to the room. This cycle continues to regulate the indoor temperature and humidity. Fresh air is typically obtained by centrally treating outdoor air in a fresh air handling unit (FAH) before being delivered to the room through ducts. Because the refrigerant and heating media used in fan coil units are also centrally supplied, fan coil air conditioning systems are considered semi-centralized. In this system, cooling and heat are carried into the conditioned room by air and water, respectively, making it an air-to-water system.
